Is a 5 Tonne Excavator the Right Size for Your Job?

A 5 tonne excavator suits most trenching, drainage and site preparation work where access is limited or a 14 tonne machine would be more than the job needs. This guide covers where a 5t machine like the Komatsu PC55 fits, and when to size up or down.

Where a 5 tonne excavator fits

The 5 tonne class sits between mini excavators and full-size civil machines. It has the weight and reach for genuine civil work, while staying compact enough for residential lots and tight commercial sites. Typical jobs include:

  • Drainage installation and trenching on civil subdivisions
Service connection trenches for utilities and pipelines
Site preparation and excavation on residential builds
    Light demolition and site clearance
    Material handling and loading

Five questions to answer before you choose a size

1. What is the site access like? Measure gates, driveways and gaps between structures. A 5t machine fits where a 14t can't; a mini excavator fits where a 5t can't.

2. How deep do you need to dig? Check the machine's published maximum dig depth against your design depth, with a margin. Specifications for our Komatsu PC55 are on its hire page.

3. How much material is moving? For larger excavations and longer trench runs, a 14t machine will usually finish sooner. For trenching and detail work on tighter sites, a 5t is often the more efficient choice.

4. What is it loading into? If the machine is loading trucks, check it can reach over the side of the body you're using.

5. What attachments do you need? Confirm buckets and attachments before the machine is booked.

when to size up or down

Size down to a 1.7 tonne mini excavator for backyard access, landscaping and tight work where a 5t won't fit.

Size up to a 14 tonne excavator when the job needs deeper digging, more reach or a faster production rate, and the site has room for a larger machine and its transport.

Getting the size wrong costs time either way: an undersized machine slows production, and an oversized one can't get in or damages the site.

what this means on site

For drainage, service and site preparation packages on residential and light commercial sites, a 5 tonne excavator is often the right balance of production and access.

Our Komatsu PC55 has worked on civil packages from Warnbro, Rockingham and Mandurah in the south to Wanneroo and Joondalup in the north. It is mine-spec maintained, arrives fully serviced and pre-delivery inspected, and comes with documentation to support your site induction.
